Ian and Janet have wide experience of travelling and of cruising. They have served as port and destination lecturers on cruises since 2002. Details are set out below.

Ian is a retired solicitor/lawyer, who specialised in water and environmental law. His professional career was mainly in the British water industry, ending his career as the Authority Secretary and Solicitor of Severn Trent Water Authority. On privatisation, he became the first Company Secretary and Solicitor of Severn Trent plc & Severn Trent Water Ltd, the second largest of the British water companies. Following his retirement from full time employment, he became an international adviser on water and environmental law, lecturing, writing and drafting legislation in many countries and speaking at international conferences.

Janet’s professional background is in healthcare and education, starting as a nurse and health visitor in London, teaching health subjects in Further Education Colleges in the West Midlands, and using practical skills in family planning and childcare. She served as a Magistrate in Solihull for 21 years, and as a Member of a Board of Visitors for an open prison. For many years, she was involved in the management of Methodist International House, Birmingham, a home for overseas students, and is now a Company Director of Birmingham International Student Houses Ltd.

From 1992 till 2001, for some 2–3 months each year, they served as Christian Volunteers at The Garden Tomb, Jerusalem, where they acted as guides and assisted in the management of that important Christian pilgrimage site.

They are presently involved with the running and organisation of the Solihull Blossomfield branch of the University of the Third Age, and host the Music Enjoyment Group.

Since their youth, they have travelled and lived abroad extensively, on business and for pleasure, and also have been involved in conducting parties and lecturing abroad. They have an extensive collection of many thousands of colour slides of the countries and places that they have visited and with which they illustrate their lectures.
