XScottish Culture

  • Soc.Culture.Scottish FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions file started in 1994 for the Soc.Culture.Scottish Internet news group – very useful. See also the Soc.Culture.Celtic FAQ.
  • National Library of Scotland – Digital library features include online maps, Scottish history interactive timeline, pages from "The Chepman & Myllar Prints" c1508.
  • Dictionary of the Scots Language – Dictionar o the Scots Leid for online reference.
  • Gaidhealtachd – Wikipedia entry describing the Gaidhealtachd, regions where Scots Gaelic is spoken as a native language.
  • Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) – A worldwide organization, founded in 1923. Patron Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) – World governing body responsible for the standardization of Highland Dancing.
  • Burns Country – Comprehensive Robert Burns site, includes the Burns Encyclopedia online and the complete works of Robbie Burns.
  • Scottish Tartans Authority – Registered Scottish Charity established 1996 "with the major objective of promoting a deeper knowledge of Scottish Tartans, their origins, manufacture, use, history and development", maintains the International Tartan Index. Useful FAQs.
  • College of Piping – "The international centre of the bagpipe world". Links!
  • The Piobaireachd Society – Formed in 1903 to encourage the study and playing of piobaireachd ('pibroch'), the classical music of the Highland bagpipe.
  • Universe of Bagpipes – Colourful site, regularly updated. Lots of links.
  • TradTunes – New pay download site for traditional, Celtic and roots music by Uist Media Group. Free online Radio shows.
  • MusicScotland – Retail site with over 4,000 titles.
  • Tartan TV (TTV) – "Television from the heart of Scotland". Website includes hours of video clips, gift shop.
  • Caledonian Society of Norway – There are historical Sinclair connections with Norway, and our Chief is the Patron of this Society.
  • Comunn na Piobaireachd NZ – "Piobaireachd & Piping related information from the Antipodes", New Zealand's pibroch society.
  • Grandfather Mountain Highland Games – Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans each July near Linville, North Carolina at Grandfather Mountain (Beinn Seanair).
  • Stone Mountain Highland Games – Official website of "the friendly games" held each October near Atlanta, Georgia and well-attended by Sinclairs.
