24 June

From June 24th to 28th, Mi'kmaq in Atlantic Canada will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the baptism of Grand Chief Henri Membertou, a shaman and prophet. His baptism signified the Mi'kmaq people's desire for peaceful relations with Europeans.

The celebration begins in Port Royal with a re–enactment of that baptism, which took place 24 Jun 1610, then continues to Halifax Halifax Common for the largest gathering of First Nation people in Atlantic Canada. There will be a traditional Mi'kmaq village, dance and drum competitions, and a free concert by Buffy Sainte–Marie.

These events are organized by the Mi'kmaq Association of Cultural Studies, on behalf of the Mi'kmaq Grand Council, with support from the Government of Canada. According to the news release, "This cultural event will showcase the Mi'kmaq culture to Canadians, international dignitaries, and other Aboriginal peoples." A documentary will be made about cooperation between the Mi'kmaq and the French, and distributed to Canadian schools.
